At Barry Freeman's Funeral

  *******

The funeral service of Major Edgar Jones, of Porth-y-Castell, Barry, former headmaster of Barry Boys’ Grammar School, was held at Penuel Church, Barry, on Wednesday of last week.

Representatives of educational life in Wales, cultural organizations and the B.B.C. were present at the service before burial at Barry Cemetery.

Elfed (Dr. H. Elvet Lewis) conducted the service assisted by the Rev. H. Evans Thomas, with Dr. John Morgan Lloyd at the organ. Tributes were paid to Major Jones by the Rev. J. R. Evans, of Cardiff, and Mr. Alun Oldfield Davies.

 A Tribute

By WILLIAM HUGHES, Park Road, Barry.

Dr. Edgar Jones has left us, but his teachings and his influence remain. We humbly and gratefully give thanks for such a gracious life.

How privileged were we, who came in close contact with the family at “Eryl.” The influence of this home in our community was conveyed in an Easter greeting – “May the happiness that has come to so many through you, circle back to you, as we pray for you at Easter time.”

How aptly the house named “Eryl “—the wide outlook. Edgar Jones was a man of wide outlook, Essentially a man of the people, mixing freely with the humble and the great, in very truth it can be said,” He walked with kings, yet kept the common touch.” His counsel was sought by the universities and learned societies, and yet he was equally at home in the cricket or football field, the athletic track, the swimming pool and the bowling green.

SPORTS INTEREST

His great interest in sport remained with him to the end. No one-game man was Edgar Jones. He enjoyed all sport, and was, indeed, a sportsman in every sense of the term. This sportsmanship pervaded his everyday world. Although a brilliant and cultured speaker, perhaps his greatest asset was the fact that he was a good listener. Taking the trouble to find out your innermost thoughts and understanding your problems, his advice was always sincere and sound.

No class hatred, no jealousies, no pettiness and careerism for him. He served his community believing as other great men believe, “He lives most, who serves most.” A man of peace, although he respected the opinions of others, he had the courage to maintain his own. To paraphrase Noel Monks, “To have known him was an honour, but to have lived with him and to count him amongst my friends is a privilege I shall cherish as long as I may live.”

Edgar Jones stands out in the public life of Barry as an example to all of us. Truly it can be said of him “That rising to eminence by merit, he lived respected and died regretted.”
